"So 6 weeks in to the lockdown! And wondering how is everyone managing that I don’t see at Sangha nights either in Leicester or Nottingham. I guess we all have very different circumstances and living arrangements, perhaps the Dharma and Sangha seem to have drifted off out of our spiritual Mandala or perhaps the very opposite is true for you, and your practice has taken on a new life during these restricted times.
If you want to share your experiences then please do and we can post them on the website/facebook page. It may help everyone feel more connected I trust.
Spiritual practice in a crisis!
So initially had great big ideas of how I would deepen my practice of the precepts, study and meditation, however I quickly became overwhelmed by the amount of material that became available online from retreats, mediation drop-ins, talks, books and other courses! Where would I begin? – Greed in the Spiritual life is real too – I wanted to do it all! I didn’t want to miss out on the opportunities arising. However, reality has a way of making itself known and I was reminded of something Sangharakshita said “more and more of less and less”. It is was a good reminder to step back and reflect on what I truly needed at this time – instead of grasping at everything that was on offer.
I looked to my current experience in the shape of my thoughts and feelings – anxious thoughts & feelings were arising. This was also the main hinderance in my meditation practice – I knew the antidotes – however it seemed that I preferred to indulge in the “what ifs”! Being lost in my own thoughts is a favourite past time! I was fortunate to be part of the Wildmind online Community which is run by Bodhipaksa. He had set up a course in response to this Global pandemic called “Finding Calm in a Crisis”. It has been a wonderful opportunity to do more and more and yet less and less mediation with this course. The mediation experiences have directed me out of my head into my body and breath, it has lead to periods of deep calm , and little by little, a quieter and more settled state of mind. The mediations have been no longer than 30m mins to date, and as short as 3 mins. It has allowed me to deepen my other practices and given me the mental space to sit still and study.
So in the midst of a crisis a Spiritual Practice is helping me to be calmer and less reactive. How about you?"
